Chapter 27

Yichang

“T he obvious thing to do would be to head for the mountains to get away from the whole surveillance network,” Adam said. “So I say we go in the opposite direction. Go straight into the big city of Yichang and disappear there.”

Soon, they accelerated onto a two-lane causeway that followed curves of the river. In places the canyon walls were so steep, the streamlined roadway rested on concrete pilings rising up from the roiling Yangtze.

On the outskirts of Yichang, the highway morphed into a wide city boulevard lined with trees, shops and high rise apartments.

Just when Adam thought they’d outsmarted their pursuers, a siren blared and a PAP—People’s Armed Police—car appeared in the rearview mirror, coming on fast.

Getting captured was not an option. There was no way Adam was going to let Chung Qichang and his family get sliced up by organ harvesting surgeons. Having no other choice, he floored it. Luckily, he had some black-ops escape and evasion driver training. But the top-heavy, bucket-of-bolts police truck had the maneuverability of an ox cart and the stability of a round ball, nearly rolling over on the turns. However, it did have one hell of an engine. The chase was on.

Soon, a second and then a third cop car fell in behind the first. Adam did his absolute best to shake them, dodging through traffic and accelerating to top speed wherever possible—and sometimes even when seemingly impossible and downright insane.

On corner after corner, he tapped the brakes barely enough to keep from flipping. Then, with wheels and engine screaming, he laid rubber racing to the next turn. As the chase unfolded, the poor Chung family got thrown about like pebbles in a baby’s rattle. But there were no complaints, only encouragement. Little Jia yelled, “You’re fantastic. You can do it.”

And by golly, the cops did fall back a bit, but just slightly.

Suddenly, ahead, a police road block. A line of vehicles spanned the entire wide boulevard, blocking even the sidewalks. There was no way through.

Adam yelled, “Brace yourselves.”

Then, slowing slightly, he cranked the wheel hard right. The wagon tilted onto two wheels—teetering. But, by some miracle, it rounded the turn tires down, and shot into an alley barely a foot wider than the paddy wagon itself.

With no way to miss them, garbage cans and piles of boxes went flying, then got demolished under the truck, leaving a swath of debris behind them.

Looking back, Qichang said, “Maybe that’ll slow them…”

And it seemed to be working, the pursuing CPP cops were slowing.

They emerged from the alley on the next street. The street seemed clear. Oh oh, to their right, a cop car came screeching around the corner. So Adam shot off to the left.

But no matter what Adam did, the CPP cops stuck to them like glue, matching him turn for turn, speed burst for speed burst.

Like cops everywhere, if you hold them at gun point, lock them in their own jail, bust prisoners out of said jail, and lead them
